Rakshabandhan: The Right Opportunity to Mend Fractured Relationships

A festival that reminds families to rebuild trust, respect, equality and mutual support beyond the ritual of tying a rakhi

The festival of Rakshabandhan has for centuries been a symbol of the unbreakable love, protection, and trust between brothers and sisters. The thread of the rakhi is not merely a promise of physical protection, but also of emotional support, understanding, and impartial affection. Yet today, when we look around us, we see that this festival is losing its original essence in many families. Relationships are being weighed on the scales of wealth and status. No effort is spared in welcoming rich relatives, while poor or ordinary relatives are met with clear disrespect and distance.

Some relatives and siblings spend their lives in gossip. Well-intentioned words spoken in goodwill are twisted and misrepresented. People who have no connection whatsoever with an incident are unnecessarily dragged into conflicts, and as a result, distances keep growing within families.

Some people live under the illusion that they alone are wise and others are fools. Ego and a sense of superiority further weaken relationships.

Being a Family Is Not Enough; Being There for Each Other Matters

Just being one family is not enough. Having a family in name only and reducing relationships to mere formalities serves no purpose. A true family is formed when we stand by each other in both sorrow and joy. When trouble befalls someone, we should stand up for them without keeping accounts, and in moments of happiness, we should neither feel envy nor create distance. Today, many families remain connected only in name, but turn away from one another in times of need. It is this distance that breaks relationships.

Rakshabandhan reminds us that a true bond is not built on displays of wealth, position, or intellect. It is built on equality, respect, pure emotion, and the commitment to stand by each other in every situation. When a sister ties the rakhi, the brother promises to protect her. Today, this promise must be understood in a broader sense—not only protection from external dangers, but also protection from the bitterness, discrimination, misunderstandings, and loneliness growing within the family itself.

How Can We Restore the True Spirit of Rakshabandhan?

• Respect every relative regardless of financial status. Whether rich or poor, the relationship remains the same.

• Avoid gossip and misrepresentation. If someone offers advice, try to understand it rather than distorting it and passing it on to others.

• Give up ego. No one is completely wise, and no one is completely foolish. Everyone has their own limitations and strengths.

• Forgive old misunderstandings and communicate directly. Many distances grow simply due to a lack of conversation.

• Stand by each other in sorrow and joy. Meeting only on festivals is not enough. Become each other’s support in everyday life.

The true significance of Rakshabandhan lies when the rakhi thread is tied not only on the wrist but also in the heart. When every member of the family feels respected, heard, free from discrimination, and not alone in times of need. Only then will this festival become meaningful and useful for society.

Let us make this year’s Rakshabandhan a means to reconnect relationships. Let us celebrate it with pure love, equality, and mutual support, free from show and greed. Because in the end, family is the place where we should be accepted unconditionally—rich or poor, learned or ordinary, all of us. And it is the place where support should be available in both joy and sorrow.

The rakhi thread is an invitation to strengthen weakened relationships and to become each other’s support in every situation. Accept it.
